Moss

"I got the three-window hood from Moss, cost me about £350 with about another £150 for a recommended garage to fit it. Whilst the rear quarterlights are excellent, increasing light in the cabin and visibility with the hood up, I wouldn't recommend this hood. After 12 months the windows are quite cloudy, and the hood itself has shrunk, exposing the window seals somewhat." Mike Christie

"Moss supplied Robbins hood mis-fitting by the local Mazda garage… then I would advise anybody going for a Robbins hood that they are 'big' - and leave virtually no room around the windows for error (max. 2-3mm on mine), expert fitting is paramount for a good fit - I just hope this thing doesn't stretch like the OEM hoods do…" Tim Woodward

"I had a Mohair (cloth) hood from Autohoods fitted last week (my OE one was on it's last legs and cracking in various places). Cost was £454 inc. VAT (£360 for the hood + £94 fitting), which I think for Mohair is a good price. Very pleased with it, fit, is as far as I can tell, perfect and no leaks yet. Also IMHO looks much better than the original vinyl roof." Steve Willington

Mx5 rear screen replacement service, Better than original clear plastic "new back screen, made out of some sort of wonder plastic that bends (so doesn't need to be unzipped to open roof), and is scratch and stain proof. Whole job cost 180" or glass conversion with HRW. Same day, Post or Personal callers, 7 days, 7am-10pm, 0181 777 6764

Roof fitting;

"We fit lots of hoods, and if a hood proves to be a bit loose, or have the odd ripple in it etc, we steam it on the inside with a wallpaper steamer. The effect is a bit like washing your jeans on a hot wash, they shrink! Every automotive trimmer I have ever met uses this method to ensure a good fit when fitting a new hood. "Val@ MX5 Parts (Scimitar International)

Cleaning rear windows

If the scratches aren't too deep, go to your nearest BMW dealer and ask for part number 81 22 9 407 665. That should be an excellent product for plastic window care.

Soft top Zip slider;

Get a new slider from Mazda (they say they do not have this part, tell them to order NA01-R1-250B) for about 3 quid.

Tenax fasteners are used to secure the roof cover. A good source of all things "Trimming" (rubber sections, fasteners of all sorts, zips, carpets, even cow hides) is: Creech Coachtrimming Centre, 45 Anerley Rd, Crystal Palace, London SE19 2AS, 0181 659 4135

Bodykits

"NEW BRITISH BODYKIT FOR Mk1 from Coventry Prototype Panels www.phantomcpp.com. This was supposed to be exclusive to Moss but the makers had an early silver roadster showing the new panels and are supplying direct ... IMO the front and rear bumpers (with Porsche 944 style rear
valance) look very good but I'm not so struck by the side sills and rear lip spoiler (who needs one?) .... and MOST IMPORTANT for Eunos folks the rear panel to take a UK number plate is an excellent fit and looks smoother than the UK original - they'll sell a few of these even at £185 + VAT ... they also have the rigid deck type tonneau .... the only fly in the ointment seems to be the high prices (each bumper £299, sills £150 pair etc.) ..... but *maybe* Moss will bring them down" Keith Justice

Number plate legal?

The letters must be 3 1/8 " (79mm) high, and the stroke width 14mm.
There must be 11mm between characters, except between the group of letters and numbers, where the gap must be 33mm.
There must be 11mm margin all round.
The plates must be marked BSAU145a and with the manufacturers identity (For this reason alone front stick-ons are illegal.)

If you've got two rows of digits (eg squarish Roadster plates) - there must be a gap of 19mm between the upper and lower rows.
So two rows at 79mm each, top and bottom margin at 11mm each, central gap 19mm, total minimum height required 199mm.
The space for a Roadster plate is about 180mm in height between the very top of the rear panel and the bottom of the recess - so 19mm too small

Odd-sized rear plate on a Roadster, get one "off the shelf" in the North West from:-
CULCHETH CAR SPARES, 457a, WARRINGTON ROAD, CULCHETH, CHESHIRE, WA3 5SJ Tel:- 01925 762279
He supplies them in 13" x 6.5", which fits snugly, and puts the correct full size numerals on. Cost is £11 inclusive of a (normal) UK style front plate.
TIPPERS of 20, Benfleet Road, Benfleet, Essex Tel 01702 553225 Fax 01702 553385
They will make you one up to the exact size (355 mm X 165mm), on which you can just about get full legal size letters but they end up a bit closer than they should be.

Body braces

’94 onwards cars have extra braces unless it is poverty spec car (1.6 etc)

  1. U shaped brace from bottom of rear sub-frame forward to the ends of the chassis rails
  2. Bar behind seats between seatbelt top anchor points – meant for improving side impact performance
  3. Front chassis brace – never did work out what this was on my ’94! But on lower front sub-frame area

Aftermarket there are a few

  1. Front strut brace between shock absorber mounts in engine bay
  2. Front strut brace as above but with triangulation back to firewall of engine bay
  3. Rear strut brace – seen but rare.
  4. Okuyama Performance Slot Triangle Chassis/Drivetrain Brace 89-97 http://www.rspeed.net/miata/item.asp?dept=3&cat=0&prod=301-027 Is triangulation under gearbox to front subframe.
  5. Then just go fit a real roll bar (see Style/Rollbar section on inside body)

Towbars

Ian Rogers harveys.collect@virgin.net has Brinks towbar with removable swan necked towbar fitted to rear towing eyes location; used for bike rack £250

"I carry two mountain-bikes on my '5 from time-to-time. There's a company in Northern Ireland who make tow-bars, and they had a 'kit' that they welded together for me. Fits into the bolt-holes used by the rear tie-down hooks,
so it's completely removeable. I think they were surprised to have someone asking for one for an MX5... plus they couldn't tell me the towing-capacity as their book just listed '0'.

This thing cost me just £70 or so from the manufacturer, David Murphy Ltd, 182 Belfast Road, Carryduff - just outside Belfast. Tel. (01232) 812439

I didn't buy the tow-ball nor electrics as I won't be using a trailer, but I'm sure a smallish trailer would be okay. The bike bracket slips into a receptacle where the tow-ball would have been and is rock steady - I've moved two bikes over 120 miles a couple of times, with no problems. The actual bike rack and receptacle were separately-bought, generic items and cost £30

The unit isn't exactly low-profile but neither is it too visible. I can send you JPGs but have a look at:
